Battery and pilot FAQs

Optimising your battery. Not overworking it.

In many cases, Sharevolt Energy may not ask your battery to do more. We may simply ask it to charge or discharge at a different time from when it normally would—helping the local energy system while still serving your home.

Some flexibility events may create additional battery use. When they do, we aim to keep it proportionate, measurable and within the approved limits for each compatible system.

Straight answers about your battery.

Home energy systems are valuable equipment. These answers explain the safeguards Sharevolt Energy is building into its residential pilot and the points that will be confirmed with every participant before live activity begins.

Getting started
Can I get paid for my home battery?

Your battery could earn rewards by taking part in an available flexibility programme. Sharevolt Energy is developing this opportunity; we cannot yet confirm payments, a start date or a place for every applicant.

Register your interest so we can assess your equipment. Any rewards, costs and participation terms would be explained before you decide to enrol.

Does registering interest enrol me in a paid programme?

No. Registration lets us understand your setup and contact you about possible next steps. It does not connect or authorise control of your battery, and it does not commit you to join.

What happens if I don’t know my battery or inverter brand?

Select “Not sure” on the registration form. Battery capacity is optional. We can discuss the details later if a suitable opportunity becomes available.

What about electric vehicles and heat pumps?

Our immediate focus is home batteries. Electric vehicles, heat pumps and other flexible devices remain part of the wider opportunity we want to explore. The registration form still lets you tell us about those technologies, without guaranteeing a programme or compatibility.

Optimisation and cycling
Does optimising mean using my battery more?

Not necessarily. A home battery may already charge when solar power is available or electricity is cheaper, then discharge later to supply the home. Sharevolt Energy can often create flexibility by adjusting the timing of activity that was likely to happen anyway.

For example, we might ask a compatible battery to charge slightly earlier when renewable electricity is plentiful, or discharge during a short local peak instead of later in the evening. That may shift an existing cycle rather than add another one.

Optimising means using available flexibility intelligently—not assuming that more cycling is always better.

Could a Sharevolt Energy event add extra battery use?

Yes, some events could add energy throughput that would not otherwise have occurred. The amount will depend on the service being tested, your battery's starting charge, household demand and solar generation.

Sharevolt Energy aims to avoid unnecessary activity, use only what is needed, record what happens and share participation fairly across the available fleet. Any event or annual usage limits will be set out before live participation.

What is a battery cycle?

An equivalent full cycle is the movement of energy equal to the battery's usable capacity. It does not have to happen as one journey from 100% to empty.

Several smaller charge and discharge movements can add up to one equivalent full cycle. That is why energy throughput is often a more useful measure than simply counting how many times a battery responds.

How often and for how long will Sharevolt Energy use my battery?

There is no single fixed number. Flexibility events will vary depending on the service being provided, conditions on the electricity network and the availability of participating batteries. Some may last only a short time; others may run longer.

Before joining a particular programme, you will be told the expected pattern of activity, any contractual limits that apply, and how Sharevolt Energy will protect your reserve and battery settings. The initial pilot will begin with limited, supervised activity so we can establish how supported batteries respond safely and reliably.

Warranty and wear
Will joining Sharevolt Energy affect my battery warranty?

Joining a flexibility service does not automatically cancel a battery warranty, but warranty terms differ between manufacturers, models and installations.

Before Sharevolt Energy actively controls a battery, we will confirm that the model and available control method are compatible with the pilot. We will not knowingly operate a battery outside its published operating limits. If compatibility or warranty conditions cannot be established, that system will not be used for live events.

Your existing warranty remains with its manufacturer or installer. Sharevolt Energy does not replace or extend it unless that is expressly agreed in writing.

Does battery use cause wear and degradation?

All batteries gradually lose some capacity through age and use. Charging and discharging can contribute to that process whether the activity comes from normal household use, tariff optimisation or a flexibility event.

The effect is influenced by factors such as total energy throughput, depth of discharge, temperature, battery chemistry and the manufacturer's battery-management system. Sharevolt Energy's approach is to minimise unnecessary cycling, respect device limits and measure the activity attributable to the pilot where device data allows.

Is normal degradation covered by a battery warranty?

Battery warranties commonly cover manufacturing faults and promise a minimum level of retained capacity, cycle allowance or lifetime energy throughput. They do not usually promise that the battery will experience no normal degradation.

The exact cover depends on your model and warranty document. We will review compatibility before live participation, but your manufacturer or installer remains the authoritative source for a warranty claim.

What happens if my battery develops a fault?

If Sharevolt Energy detects data suggesting that a battery is unavailable, unhealthy or not responding as expected, it can be excluded from further activity while the issue is investigated. We will retain the available event and command records and tell you when action may be required.

Hardware repairs, installation faults and manufacturer warranty claims normally remain the responsibility of the manufacturer or installer. The participant agreement will explain responsibilities for the pilot in more detail.

Your home and reserve
Could Sharevolt Energy completely empty my battery?

No. Sharevolt Energy is designed to use only the flexibility available above your household's protected reserve and within the battery's own operating limits.

Before a discharge-capable action, the platform checks recent device data, charge level, connectivity and the reserve reported by the manufacturer. If essential information is unavailable or out of date, the battery is not used.

Will my battery still work during a power cut?

That depends on how your battery was installed. Sharevolt Energy cannot add backup capability to a system that does not already have it.

If your system supports backup, its manufacturer controls what happens after the grid fails. Sharevolt Energy will not intentionally begin a flexibility action during a known outage. Your protected reserve is intended to leave energy available for your home, but backup duration can never be guaranteed—it depends on the available charge, household consumption, solar production and system configuration.

What happens if severe weather is forecast?

Household safety and the battery's own protections come first. Planned pilot activity can be paused where severe weather or a likely outage makes preserving home energy the more sensible choice.

The battery manufacturer's emergency or storm settings remain important. The exact severe-weather procedure will be confirmed in the participant information for each supported system.

Will Sharevolt Energy increase my electricity bill?

Charging and discharging loses a small amount of energy, and some events could change when electricity is imported or exported. Those effects depend on your tariff, solar production and battery efficiency.

Before any paid service is offered, Sharevolt Energy will explain how rewards are calculated and how relevant energy costs are treated. We will not describe a payment as a net saving if the related costs have not been considered.

Control and participation
Can I pause or leave the pilot?

Registering interest does not commit you to participate. If you later enrol, you will be able to withdraw your consent and Sharevolt Energy will stop selecting your battery for new activity.

The final participant terms will explain how to request a temporary pause or leave, any notice period, and whether reduced participation affects a reward. A command already submitted to a manufacturer's cloud service may not always be instantly recallable, so that limitation will also be made clear.

Can I still use my manufacturer's app?

Normally, yes, although the controls available during an event depend on the battery manufacturer and connection method. Sharevolt Energy does not bypass the manufacturer's safety system.

If a setting you change conflicts with planned activity, Sharevolt Energy should exclude the battery or stop safely rather than repeatedly overwrite a later customer choice. The exact behaviour will be tested for every supported battery model.

Who decides when the battery responds?

Sharevolt Energy coordinates participating batteries in response to a planned pilot test or an agreed flexibility need. Before any action, the system checks whether that particular battery is eligible and available at that moment.

Being connected does not mean the battery will be used every time. Its reserve, current charge, connectivity, device capability, household pause status and other safeguards all affect whether it can participate.

Practical questions
What happens if my internet connection fails?

Sharevolt Energy may be unable to confirm the battery's current state or send an instruction, so the system will normally be excluded from activity until fresh information is available again.

The battery should continue following its manufacturer's local safety and operating behaviour. App and cloud features during an internet outage vary by manufacturer.

What information can Sharevolt Energy see?

After you explicitly connect a compatible system, Sharevolt Energy may receive information such as charge level, power, operating mode, connectivity, reserve settings, device capability and command results. This helps determine whether a battery is available and verify what happened during an event.

The manufacturer sign-in takes place through our secure technology partner. Sharevolt Energy does not receive the password for your manufacturer account.

Will I be paid for taking part?

Registering interest does not create a payment entitlement. Potential rewards will depend on the opportunities available, the final pilot design and whether a battery successfully participates.

Before you enrol in any rewarded activity, Sharevolt Energy will explain what is guaranteed, what depends on performance, how payments are calculated and any relevant energy costs. Returns will not be guaranteed unless they are expressly included in the participant agreement.

Do participation rewards take battery wear into account?

Yes. Any participation reward will be designed to recognise both the value your battery provides and the battery use involved, including normal wear associated with flexibility activity.

In many cases, Sharevolt Energy may be optimising the timing of charging or discharging that was likely to happen anyway, so the additional wear may be limited. Where an event creates additional energy throughput, that use should form part of the commercial value considered when setting the reward.

A reward is not a separate battery warranty or a guarantee that every element of degradation has been individually reimbursed. The payment basis and expected battery activity will be explained before you join.

Which batteries can take part?

Compatibility depends on the manufacturer, model, installed configuration and the controls made available through its authorised connection. Support for a brand does not necessarily mean that every model is eligible.

Sharevolt Energy will confirm compatibility separately before asking anyone to join the live pilot. You can register your interest even if your system is not yet supported.
